2024-2025 Class Titles and Descriptions
Class Title | Description |

Algebra 1 | Get ready for a full year of Algebra using the Open Stax Algebra textbook. A placement test will be given to ensure readiness for the course. A print PDF copy of the textbook will be supplied by HSAP. *Note: This course meets twice a week (Mondays in person and Thursdays virtually) and will run 31 weeks with the extra 7 weeks being: 8/26, 09/02 (only TH class this week), 09/09, 10/21, 1/6, 1/13, 3/10. Outside work is required and will be communicated through Google Classroom. |
Art Around the World | We will be using a variety of media as we explore unique forms of art from around the world. |
Art: Perspective | We will learn how to use one and two point perspective to create realistic and powerful depth in our artwork. |
Calligraphy A | Calligraphy means “beautiful writing.” Students will use felt-tip calligraphy markers and practice the pen strokes used for writing in a variety of common styles. We’ll work with Italic, Roman and Gothic styles, as time allows, along with viewing mixed patterns used in “modern calligraphy.” |

Child Development | In this class we will gain knowledge and skills related to the care of children with focuses on the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth of children. |
Color Pencil Plus | We will be learning how to use color pencils as we explore creative and surrealistic art. |
Creative Writing 1 | In this class we will be using graffiti, eavesdropping, staring, and asking too many questions in order to learn about the creative writing process. Beware, families! You will probably end up in one of your young writers’ stories! |
Creative Writing 2 | In this class we will be using graffiti, eavesdropping, staring, and asking too many questions in order to learn about the creative writing process. Beware, families! You will probably end up in one of your young writers’ stories! We will explore creative writing through a process of learning the elements of a story and how to effectively put those elements together. |
Drawing People | For beginning students, we will be learning the basics of drawing people. For the more advanced students, we will be adding new and challenging twists to drawing people. |
Earth & Space Science | In this class we will learn about the matter that cycles through Earth’s systems (and why it matters), the movement of solar bodies, and how gravity impacts things in outer space.This class can be taken alone or combined with Environmental Science for a full year of high school level science. |
Engineering & Design A | Explore middle school-level physical science concepts through discussions, lab experiments, and activities. The content of this class is different from the classes offered in the 2023/2024 school year. We will use what we learn to design projects each quarter that relate to the topics we study. Q3 topics will include light and sound. Q4 topics will include electricity and magnetism. This class can be taken alone or combined with MS Life Science A (first semester). Outside-of-class work is optional; if you wish to use this as your student’s science for the year, please select “MS Science: ALL In.” |
Environmental Science | We will examine key concepts related to environmental science with a focus on thinking about complex issues related to watersheds and the impact of new technologies on the environment. This class can be taken alone or combined with Earth & Space Science for a full year of high school level science lab experience. |
Food Truck | Do you enjoy design and planning? In this class, we will be designing a food truck! Included in the class will be opportunities to plan and design menus, logos, colors, and a food truck layout. A local food truck owner will also be in to talk with the class about his experience and offer a tour of his truck. Students will work collaboratively on a team. |
Fun & Games | Enjoy an hour of fun while we play games we love and learn new ones from friends. |

IEW Level 2 Writing | We will be using Structure and Style for Students Level B Year 2 to refine our writing skills. This class would be a good fit for students who have taken IEW writing before. Time spent outside of class will be required to complete writing assignments. |
Life Science A | Explore middle school-level life science concepts through discussions, lab experiments, and activities. Topics will include characteristics of living things, classification, cells, and genetics. This class can be taken alone or continued in MS Science Engineering & Design second semester for new topics and activities. Outside-of-class work is optional; if you wish to use this as your student’s science for the year, please select “MS Science: ALL In.” |
Life Skills | In this class we will sample learning life skills based on feedback from students who are signed up for the class. Skills may include sewing, cooking, first aid, and many more! |
Lines / Op Art | We will learn how to use line and color to manipulate space and create optical illusions. |
Master’s Apprentice | We will be exploring various media as we travel through time and learn about art and artists in history. |
Middle School Science: ALL In | For parents who would like to use Monday’s labs plus outside-of-class work as their student’s science for the year, this version of the class is for you! Students will do all the labs and activities described in Life Science A and Engineering & Design PLUS have extended learning opportunities facilitated through Google Classroom.Families may choose the resource materials they prefer to use as references for this class. |
Middle School Spanish | This class will have you listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish through a variety of activities, songs, and games. Individual goals and plans will be developed based on student experience, and vocabulary topics will vary from last year’s class. |
Perspective Revamped | Perspective is a powerful tool for the artist. Beginners will be learning the basics. Advanced students will push and develop their understanding and use of perspective. |
Sculpting 1 | Get ready to play with clay! In this class, students will use polymer clay to create fun objects. |
Sculpting 2 | More clay! Students will work on more advanced sculptures and techniques in this class. You do not need to have taken Sculpting 1 to join the fun. |
Study Hall | Students with a gap in their schedule can enjoy some supervised space in our HSAP Commons to work on homework, read, or quietly converse with others. |
Watercolor Painting | We will learn about and use a variety of watercolor techniques to create abstract and realistic art work. |
